The Holy Spirit: Our Key To The Kingdom

The Kingdom of Heaven

"In those days John the Baptist came, preaching in the Desert of Judea and saying, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near."(Matthew 3:1-2)

"Once, having been asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God would come, Jesus replied, "The kingdom of God does not come with your careful observation, nor will people say, 'Here it is,' or 'There it is,' because the kingdom of God is within you." (Luke 17:20-21)

"Then Peter said to them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost." (Acts 2:38)

What a gift! It is truly amazing to think how lucky we are to be living after Christ's sacrifice and death on the cross for us. All of the generations prior to ours had no way of getting access to the Holy Ghost – without God expressly giving it to them. But we do. All we have to do is believe in Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior. The Holy Spirit is our key to the kingdom of heaven. The kingdom of heaven is truly at hand!

Sealed by the Holy Spirit

"In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that Holy Spirit of promise" (Ephesians 1:13)

The seal of the Holy Spirit is an invisible and spiritual seal every true believer has. It is circumcision that is internal and invisible.

Just as Abraham entered a covenant with God after sacrificing his son, through the covenant of the circumcision of the flesh, "This is my covenant with you and your descendants after you, the covenant you are to keep: Every male among you shall be circumcised." (Genesis 17:10), so is our covenant with God after He sacrificed His son for us through the circumcision of our hearts with the Holy Spirit. "No, a man is a Jew if he is one inwardly; and circumcision is circumcision of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the written code. Such a man's praise is not from men, but from God." (Romans 2:29)

Rebirth through the Holy Spirit

With your acceptance of Jesus and through Him – of the Spirit – you effectively die and are reborn with Him "Jesus answered, "I tell you the truth, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit. Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit. You should not be surprised at my saying, 'You must be born again.'" (John 3:5-7)

You are reborn with the Spirit in you and suddenly things are very different. Non-believers do not have this Spirit – this seal – and cannot comprehend it. We could not comprehend this either before we came to Christ. "The Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you" (John 14:17).

For you this whole vision is nothing but words sealed in a scroll. And if you give the scroll to someone who can read, and say to him, "Read this, please," he will answer, "I can't; it is sealed." (Isaiah 29:11)

Power through the Holy Spirit

It is through the Holy Spirit that we can get knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom of heaven – and the power that comes with that knowledge. "He replied, "The knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom of heaven has been given to you, but not to them." (Matthew 13:11)

Just what kind of power is given to us through the Holy Spirit? The full power of the kingdom of heaven:

"As you go, preach this message: 'The kingdom of heaven is near.' Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those who have leprosy, drive out demons. Freely you have received, freely give." (Matthew 10:7-8)

This message applies to you – the reader – by receiving the Holy Spirit, you have the power to do all these things.

"For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline." (2nd Timothy 1:7)

"The Spirit of the LORD will rest on him--the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding, the Spirit of counsel and of power, the Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD" (Isaiah 11:2)

"but God has revealed it to us by his Spirit. The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God." (1 Corinthians 2:10)

The Spirit of God is Infinite

The Spirit of God – the Spirit that is within us – is infinite. It has always been there and will always be there. Our bodies are temporary and wither away, but the spirit of those who follow Christ is everlasting. As we have seen, we were chosen in Him and in His Spirit - from before the foundation of the world. God has destined this wisdom to be dispensed to us: "No, we speak of God's secret wisdom, a wisdom that has been hidden and that God destined for our glory before time began." (1 Corinthians 2:7)

This is the same Spirit that was there at the very beginning; "Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters." (Genesis 1:2) – we were there at the very beginning!

The Holy Spirit is Living Water

It is that water – living water that was there before the earth had any physical form – that symbolizes the Holy Spirit throughout the Bible. God refers to Himself as a spring of living water: "My people have committed two sins: They have forsaken me, the spring of living water, and have dug their own cisterns, broken cisterns that cannot hold water." (Jeremiah 2:13)

Jesus answered, "Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life." (John 4:13-14)

"All streams flow into the sea, yet the sea is never full. To the place the streams come from, there they return again." (Ecclesiastes 1:7)

"And I heard a voice from heaven, as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of a great thunder: and I heard the voice of harpers harping with their harps" (Revelation 14:2)

Respect the Holy Spirit!

Be forewarned – with great power comes great responsibility. It is the highest sin to grieve the Holy-Spirit. "Yet they rebelled and grieved his Holy Spirit. So he turned and became their enemy and he himself fought against them." (Isaiah 63:10-11)

"You stiff-necked people, with uncircumcised hearts and ears! You are just like your fathers: You always resist the Holy Spirit!" (Acts 7:51)

"And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption." (Ephesians 4:30)

"Then Peter said, "Ananias, how is it that Satan has so filled your heart that you have lied to the Holy Spirit and have kept for yourself some of the money you received for the land?" (Act 5:3) – Ananias then falls to the ground and dies.

"So I tell you, every sin and blasphemy can be forgiven--except blasphemy against the Holy Spirit, which will never be forgiven. Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but anyone who speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come. " (Matthew 12:31-32)

With your admittance into the body of Christ – you have attained the kingdom of heaven which is within you. Realize just how holy you now are! And may you be filled with the Spirit of God forever…
